Eastern Indiastat e-Yearbook 2010

Eastern Indian states consisted of Bihar, Chhatisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa, and West Bengal are considered economically backward states of India, however, rich in minerals and coal. The region being in plain of river Ganges is agrarian in nature as West Bengal is known as ‘Rice Bowl’ of India.

If the states of Bihar, Chhatisgarh and Jharkhand are states of mines, it is the West Bengal, which has contributed to Indian society in area of social reforms and higher education. The other contribution of the region, to the nation in area of heavy industries, backed up by ore mines in the region.
